Metropolitan Park Terraces

Overview

Metropolitan Park (METs) is a 2,100,000-square-foot office development for Amazon’s headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. The two, 22-story office buildings include 65,000 SF of street-level retail and almost four acres of new and renovated public spaces. Amazon, along with designers and builders, made envelope-pushing decisions that minimized the carbon impacts of construction, optimized building operations, and led to a superior experience for both employees working inside the building and community members who enjoy the park and local small business retail space at the site. Met’s Park recently became the largest project ever certified Platinum under LEED v4 for Building Design and Construction—and the lessons learned through construction will have an impact on the green building industry for years to come.

Scope

To bring this project to fruition, we installed 18,375 drainage cells, 4200 SF of drainage mat and waterproofing membrane, 6,300 CF of polystyrene, 22,500 SF of geotextile, and 231 LF of drainage pipe, 9000 SF of protection board, 1300 CY of intensive green roof soil, 228 CY of lightweight aggregate, 8.5 tons of sand, 8.5 tons of river rock, 5.5 tons of Mexican beach pebbles, 194 CY of mulch, an irrigation system, granite boulders, dog relief stations, 60 large fiberglass planters, 10 wooden benches, and almost 70,000 square feet of landscaping which included 74,000 perennials, 600 shrubs, and dozens of trees.
