Duke Health Bed Tower & Karsh Alumni Center

Overview

Duke University is a private research university located in Durham, North Carolina. When James B. Duke endowed Duke University in 1924, he wanted Duke to not only provide a top education, but also a great campus setting with beautiful architecture and landscaping, with enough land to accommodate the potential for future expansion. Today, that vision has become a reality with 256 buildings on 8,693 acres, which includes the 7,044-acre Duke Forest. As the site has continued its evolution and development, all growth choices must contribute to the context and improve the physical and visual character of the campus while adhering to the principles set forth in the master plan and the strategies of conserving the campus, structuring the campus, and placemaking.  Two areas that we maintain are the Duke Health Bed Tower space and the Karsh Alumni Center.

Scope

Ruppert helps Duke achieve its goals through a high standard of maintenance, which includes flower beds, trees, and turf, including care of approximately 30,000 perennials/grasses, 1200 shrubs, 1.5 acres of turf, 110,000 SF of bed space, over 200 trees, and irrigation system management.

Awards & Recognition

Ruppert was presented with a Gold Award in the National Association of Landscape Professionals’ Awards of Excellence program in 2024.
